Key Benefits of Sod
Homeowners face difficulty in most growing situations even with the best seed and
fertilizers and the most tenacious care. The grass grows, but the lawn probably
doesn't come close to perfection even after many seasons of hard work and extra expense.
When you use sod to establish your lawn you avoid these inescapable problem conditions:
- EROSION CONTROL
- Within 7 - 10 days the new sod's roots will help secure the prepared soil, so as to avoid mud and soil nutrients from washing away. Land around a building must be graded or sloped so water drains away from it.
If you seed a lawn, as water runs off, so does some seed and fertilizer. If the slopes
are steep the topsoil can be eroded. Seed washes off high spots and deposits heavily
in low spots. Erosion is not likely to happen with sod.
- WEED SUPPRESSION
- Due to the inherent qualities of sod being a very thick canopy of healthy plants and leaves, once the sod is installed there is little, if any, room for weeds to germinate and compete at the surface.
- SUN AND SHADE
- There can be variations around the house between sun and shade growing conditions. Dura-Sod is well established in optimum light conditions. You can order sod that does well under either condition.
- TIME
- The best effort at growing your own "perfect" lawn from scratch would require
at least two or three years of intensive effort and expense, without any guarantee of
being satisfied with the results. Sod provides immediate results, an "instant lawn".
More About DeLalio Sod...
- TURF TRIALS - SHOREHAM FARM
- All of the grass varieties for sod production have been observed in our trial plots as
blends and monocultures. The varieties are evaluated for drought resistance,
nitrogen requirements, color, texture, and stress tolerance. New improved varieties
are included in our trials as soon as seed is available.
- METHOD OF HARVESTING AND PACKING ROLLED SOD
| Sod is mechanically harvested to 24" wide x 60" long (10 sq. ft.). Rolled grass to soil, it is stacked on a 4' x 4' pallet, which contains 600 sq. ft. (60 pcs.) and weighs approx. 2000 - 2500 lbs. |
 |
- BIG ROLL SYSTEM
- Ideal for large areas (over 20,000 sq. ft.) that are relatively free of trees and other
obstacles. Sod is cut 4' wide x 50' long (200 sq. ft.). A laying device &
rods are provided for customers' tractors. The laying device requires a $500
returnable deposit plus a $25 per rod returnable deposit.

- DELIVERY EQUIPMENT
- Sod will be delivered on trucks with mechanical unloaders and placed in an area which is
truck accessible as the buyer's representative designates; however, final decision
as to accessibility rests with the driver. Factors such as power lines,
obstructions, soft surfaces, and adverse terrain must be considered from the standpoint of
safety.
When available and prearranged, up to one-half hour of forklift time for unloading and
pallet placement will be allowed with no charge. There will be an extra charge for delivery time in excess of one-half hour, please inquire when placing order.
- SITE INSPECTION AVAILABLE
- To recommend the best varieties for turf use and environmental conditions. (Shade,
full sun, sandy soils, rocky terrain, water supply, etc.)
Installation by a professional is recommended...
The experience and technical knowledge of a professional landscape contractor or
nurseryman is recommended to evaluate existing soil conditions and site development.
A professional considers the important environmental factors of the established
trees and plants, contours for beds and rocks, the amount of shade or light, and the
exposure. They will follow procedures for amendment of the soil with fertilizers,
limestone and other soil conditioners and can specify the proper quantities of materials
for your particular situation. The professional supplies the necessary manpower and
machinery to do your job right. You can expect professional results.
Often the amateur accepts his less-than-ideal results which could be a false
saving of time and money. The professional is anxious for the new lawn to beautify
your home, and thus be a credit to his or her business. The job will be done
thoroughly and professionally.
